Rules

Newlook's recognition Rules are filter-based mechanisms designed to provide system-wide changes to the Newlook-generated interface. They are used to provide additional interpretation information for specific host screen elements to the recognition engine prior to generation of the GUI. By default, Newlook comes with a number of built in rules based on IBM's CUA guidelines. If your application differs from these standards, the addition of various Rules may be required to ensure correct recognition of host screen elements.

Within Rules there are a number of administrative options, such as the configuration of Newlook Smartclient users' access rights, customizing title bar captions, specifying local help files and enabling change history management.

This section provides information on each of the Rule-based mechanisms available for overriding Newlook's default recognition settings. Click on the links below for more information:

  • General Rules - used to customize title bar captions, configure end-user access rights to specific settings and functions (e.g. Background Settings, the Macro Editor, Print Operations etc.), enable change history management, specify global screen element recognition (e.g. disabling Option Button generation globally) and specify local help files.
  • Filters - used to find and modify recurring screen elements.
  • Borders - used to add or modify Border definitions to allow newlook to display pop-up windows.
  • Subfiles - used to specify how subfiles are generated by the recognition engine.
  • Check Fields - used to change the default check field recognition used by the recognition engine.
  • Combo Fields - used to specify combo field choice selection behavior and set an application limit for command combo box creation.
  • Prompt Buttons - used to set various prompt button options (such as specifying the icon that will display on the button or the key that is sent to the host when a prompt button is clicked).

The key role of recognition Rules is to assist the Dynamic Recognition Engine in overcoming difficulties presented by applications that are non-compliant in terms of IBM's CUA design guidelines.
