Identify

Identify is the tool which allows Newlook developers to override the recognition engine's default conversion of host screen elements into their GUI-based equivalents. It is also the tool that is used to define a host form's Screen ID.

The Dynamic Recognition Engine uses complex pattern-matching algorithms to analyze the incoming 5250 IBM i data stream and convert screen elements into GUI objects. For example, if the recognition engine detects field choice values associated with a data entry field, the recognition engine will generate the relevant option button objects on the GUI form. The classification of screen elements is based on IBM's CUA guidelines.

When an application has not been designed according to IBM's CUA guidelines, the Dynamic Recognition Engine may incorrectly interpret screen elements. In these cases it is necessary to modify the interpretation of the incoming data stream either at a global level via Rules or at a screen level via a Host Form override created in Identify.

Typical reasons for creating an Identify-based override in a host form include:

Once changes have been made to a screen using Identify, Newlook will use the identified host screen to merge your override preferences with its automatic recognition. You only have to identify those screen elements you wish to explicitly override. All remaining screen elements will be dynamically categorized based on the host screen in use.

TIP:

If you find you are making the same change to numerous host screens, try using Filters to create global conversions.
